Mailman (City Letter Carrier)

17 Years Experience

Long Island, NY

Male, 43

I am a City Letter Carrier for the US Postal Service in NY. I've been a city letter carrier for over 17 years and it is the best job I've ever had. I mostly work 5 days per week (sometimes includes a Saturday) and often have the opportunity for overtime, which is usually voluntary. The route I deliver has about 350 homes and I walk to each of their doors to deliver the mail. Please keep in mind that I don't have authority to speak for the USPS, so all opinions are solely mine, not my employer.

If I write the wrong city name but include the correct zip code on a letter, will it arrive at the correct address?

Asked by ams101 almost 13 years ago

It should arrive at the correct Addresss. In our processing facilities mail is sorted by ZIP code. I consider a proper ZIP one of the most important part of somebody's mailing address.

do the mailman usually run on saturdays and what time do they start and stop running?

Asked by Mark almost 12 years ago

I'm not sure what you mean by running. Saturday is a regular delivery day for the USPS. As far as I know, nobody delivers any faster or slower on a Saturday. For those carriers that have routes with businesses that are closed Saturday, they may get done with their routes sooner. In this case they are sometimes given other duties to make up for the "undertime". In my office, those carriers usually do a collection run or deliver Express Mail or help out on another route that is overburdened that day. Deliveries where I work are usually made between 9:30 and 4:30. Thanks for the question.

hello what does it mean when a package is in transit?

Asked by Patrick about 12 years ago

That means a package that has been sent is traveling from it's origin (where it was mailed) to the destination post office. The package could be on a tractor-trailer or an airplane or in a sorting facility. When a package arrives at the destination post office, it will usually be scanned "arrived" so if one were to look up the package status, they would know it has been rcvd at the destination and PO and will be delivered that day or the next delivery day.

What would you recommend as procedure if we get someone else's mail? Write a note on it? Leave it?

Asked by Anonymous over 12 years ago

I would recommend that you leave it in your mailbox the next day preferably with either a post-it note on it saying "delivered to wrong address" or writing it on the letter directly if you don't have post-it note or piece of paper to clip to it saying "delivered in error". Please return it somehow to your letter carrier or the PO as you'd probably want the same done if a letter addressed to you was delivered in error somewhere else.

I was just told as a CCA that my POOM has called for all CCAs to not report to work until further notice. They have work for me. I have been there 8 months and worked almost 5 days ever week. Can he just drop us? Will the union fight that?

Asked by Mm over 12 years ago

I'm sorry to hear that regarding the POOM requesting that CCAs no longer report to work especially since you say they have work for you on most days. I have no idea what the reason would be for them requiring a stoppage in work. I don't know what legal protections you have as a CCA in opposing this. I also don't know how much the union will fight for your in this matter. I hope that they would fight for you. I just read a blurb in my local union newsletter (Long Island, NY) that a CCA has been converted into a regular employee for the first time in our district. I wish you well and hope that any work suspensions are short-lived.

how many day does a package to deliver

Asked by osman mateen almost 12 years ago

It depends on a couple of important factors: method (or type of service) sent as well as distance to destination. Priority Mail is one of the best services we offer for parcels. It usually takes about 2 days for most destinations around the country.  A more economical method is called Standard Mail or Parcel Post (not sure of the current name) which could take between 1-5 days depending on distance. Weather and Holidays could sometimes delay the transportation of parcels as well. When parcels are shipped the mailer gets a tracking number so they can see how their shipment is progressing through our transportation network similar to if you shipped via UPS or FedEx. Thanks for your question.

I put a letter in a blue collection box today, probably around 12:30. In the past, I know USPS has tried to phase these boxes out and I am worried that they are no longer thought of as important to check. How often are they really checked for mail?

Asked by Dennis over 12 years ago

You can rest assured that those blue collection boxes are checked at least 1 time after the time on the label for the stated day. For example, if the label says Mon-Fri 3PM, you can rest assured that the box is emptied AFTER 3PM each day M-F but before the last truck has been dispatched from the local post office to a regional processing and distribution center M-F. (also known as a P&DC or "plant"). Inside each collection box is a bar code which is scanned by the collection box letter carrier. The scan records the time that the box was emptied and is recorded on a central internal computer system.
