20 Years Experience

Chicago, IL

Male, 60

For twenty years I officiated high school, AAU and park district basketball games, retiring recently. For a few officiating is the focus of their occupation, while for most working as an umpire or basketball referee is an avocation. I started ref'ing to earn beer money during college, but it became a great way to stay connected to the best sports game in the universe. As a spinoff, I wrote a sports-thriller novel loosely based on my referee experiences titled, Advantage Disadvantage

Also, how much thicker skin do you have to have at the end of games?

Asked by molio64 almost 9 years ago

There is nothing worse than having an officiating partner with a chip on their shoulder, trying to be a tough guy, at any point in the game. Coaches need to respect an official, and usually that has to be earned over time. I think officials need thick skin always. Here's my red line: if a coach makes it personal in a derogatory way or if he questions my integrity then I would zap him right away, but I didn't call many technicals - I guess you would say I have thick skin. Guys who agitate coaches and call lots of Ts don't deserve to advance.

On a fastbreak Player A has stolen ball and is going in for a layin, his teammate B is trailing the play and is run into by defensive #1- A foul called on player 1 as A makes layin. Basket good. How many Free throws would player B get?

Asked by SLBEND about 8 years ago

Ok, so A1 is going in for a layup. After the ball leaves A1's hands, A2 is fouled by B1. Count A1's basket. The foul by B1 is a common foul, meaning one and one free throws are attempted only if Team B has 7, 8 or 9 fouls. If Team B has 10+ fouls, two free throws are attempted. If Team B has 6 or less fouls (in this half for all of these) then A gets the ball out of bounds with no free throws.

It is unsportsmanlike and it should void the free throw.

When driving to the basket, how much can you use your off hand to swat away the defender's reaching hand and how much can you legally push the defender?

Asked by Jay about 9 years ago

In theory, you cannot use your hand to swat away the defender. In practice, I think it is a judgement call by the official. If I were working games my judgement would be based on whether the hand swat created any kind of advantage for the offense.
